Statewide protest by trade unions

HYDERABAD Jan. 8. Members belonging to various trade unions staged demonstrations, organised "rail and rasta roko'' and participated in "jail bharo'' programme across the State, on Wednesday, protesting against the "anti-worker'' policies of the State and Central Governments.

Reports reaching the State council office of the All India Trade Union Congress, here workers were arrested in Kurnool, Ongole, Warangal, Cuddapah, while organising either "rail'' or ''rasta roko''.

In Hyderabad, a "rasta roko'' was organised before the District Collectorate. About 250 workers were arrested and released later. P. Nageswara Rao, general secretary of the State Council of AITUC, H. Mahadevan, deputy general secretary, S. Veeraiah, State CITU secretary, Suresh of IFTU and leaders of State and Central Public Sector Employees Co-ordination Committees participated.

In a statement, Mr. Nageswara Rao, said the agitation would continue till the Government reverses the policies of privatisation, liberalisation and globalisation.
