Saravanan jumps into lead

Chennai Jan. 8. International Master V. Saravanan of BPCL took full advantage of the two rounds that were played today in Chess Mate's Dr Mahalingam Sathabishekam FIDE-rated open chess tournament. He jumped into a half point lead when the seventh round concluded winning both his games. He beat Bengal's Adway Choudhury in the morning and R. Siddharth in the evening.

Deepan Chakravarthy and R. Siddharth who jointly led till yesterday made only half a point from the two rounds. They drew against each other in the morning round and lost to others in the evening.

In a Trompovsky Opening, R. Siddharth played poorly with the white pieces against V. Saravanan. Without taking his king to a safe corner by castling, he pushed up his pawns on the king-side. Saravanan exploited the position in a clinical manner and tactically destroyed white in just 40 moves.
