Kore shocks Deep Sen

HYDERABAD JAN. 8. Akshayraj Kore shocked Deep Sen Gupta in the 10th round of the Fantoosh National sub-junior chess championship at Sujatha College here today. In the girls' section also, the leader Mary Ann Gomes was defeated by Kiranmonisha Mohan to make it a day of upsets.

Deep with 8 points however continued to hold on to the top spot with a slender half point lead over Abhijeet Gupta.

Kore played a Reti opening against Deep who replied with the Dutch defence. Deep sacrificed a pawn on the 12th move for active play. In the 14th move Kore gained one more pawn with a neat combination and it eventually helped him to win the contest in 53 moves.

In the girls' section Kiranmonisha Mohan opted for a king pawn opening. This was countered by a Scillian Najdorf set up by Mary Ann. However the latter played some weak moves in the opening and this allowed Kiranmonisha to gain space advantage.
