The injured were admitted to a hospital. About 100 slogan-shouting students who came in a procession tried to break the police cordon outside the RDO office in a bid to force their way into the building. However, the police foiled the attempt, swinging lathis to push back the onrushing demonstrators. In the melee that followed, a number of students fell down and received lathi blows. Police said 25 demonstrators had been arrested in connection with the incident. The AISF district executive today condemned what it called the brutal way in which the police handled the situation and called for demonstrations to protest against the police action. The demonstration had been held today to protest against commercialisation of the educational sector and for Governmental intervention to settle other issues facing the student community. Our Staff Reporter adds from Kannur: The AISF march to the office of the Deputy Director of Education here today as part of the State-wide protest by the organisation against privatisation of education turned violent. Eight AISF workers were injured in the police action, according to sources. The trouble started when the marchers who were supposed to reach the front gate of the DDE's office in the morning entered the office compound through another entry point. The police personnel deployed at the front gate to stop the marchers rushed to the marchers and lathi-charged them. The AISF workers injured in the incident included the district president, P. Ajayakummar, the secretary, Mahesh Kakkath, Mahesh Kumar, M.C. Sajeesh, A Girish, K.V. Sagar. A.C. Ratheeshan, and P.A. Arun.
