Local bodies to propose 51 projects

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN. 8. The Minister for Local Self-Government, Cherkkalam Abdulla, said here on Wednesday that his department would propose 51 projects costing nearly Rs. 3,500 crores for presentation at the Global Investors' Meet (GIM).

The Minister said that the projects, proposed to be implemented through various city corporations and municipalities, were aimed at improving infrastructure and promoting tourism.

They would improve services to the public and the financial position of the local bodies.

Mr. Abdulla said that projects proposed under the Kochi Corporation include amusement and family entertainment centre, Kerala exposition mart, tourist complex in Fort Kochi, oceanarium and dolphinarium, parking plaza, Venduruthi bridge, Marine Drive-Kaloor flyover, Kerala gramam-heritage centre, Sarovaram Island Development, Ropeway and queen of Arabian Sea statue. The total investment proposed was Rs. 514.55 crores.

The Theerapadam project, Palayam area development project, Sanghumukhom beach development project and office-cum-commercial project were the proposals from Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The cost would total Rs. 988.94 crores.

In Kozhikode, the Kallathankadavu market, IT complex, Muthalakkulam parking plaza, trade centre and sports complex were among the proposals.

For Kollam, a commercial complex, family entertainment centre and solid waste management project have been proposed. Solid waste disposal projects have been proposed for other towns also. Land development under the Goshree Development Authority, commercial complex and bus stands in nine towns, transit station for pilgrims at Pathanamthitta were also among the proposals.

He said that land had been identified for most of the projects in the corporation and municipal areas. There was no proposal for outright sale of the land. Instead, land would be given on lease.
