Monica Joon of Delhi, who set a new National discus throw record in the under-18 category, hurls the disc on the second day of the Junior National athletic meet in Shimoga on Wednesday.
Monica flung the disc (one-kg) to a new National record of 42.44 metres in her fourth and last throw in the girls' under-18 category. On her second throw, she had touched 41.38 metres. The earlier mark of 41.01m in the inter-zonal at Kanpur in October 2001 also stood in Monica's name. Arpita Rai, the local hope messed up her very first throw, going beyond the sector, and then on was tentative to finish with a silver at 33.36m, edging past Kerala girl Nisha Mary John (32.70m). The sprints to determine the fastest athlete of the championship evoked keen interest and it was here that Karnataka stole a march over the others. Vilas Nilgund set the tone winning the boys under-20, 100-metres dash, blazing the tracks at 11.3 seconds. However, it was what followed that had the spectators in awe. The lanky Mohammed Muddassir, also from Al-Ameen College in Bangalore, was slow off the blocks running in lane four, but gave his all from the 60 metres mark to breast the tape a clear winner at 10.96 seconds to emerge the fastest athlete of the meet. He also equalled the National record held by Sanjay Mishra of Delhi set in 2001 at Bangalore. Muddassir, an 11th standard student, took to athletics only 18 months ago and tasted his first gold at the national level with this win. "I'm thrilled at the result as I gave it my all after a cautious start from the blocks," said the long legged lad. Muddassir has recorded a previous best of 10.7 seconds at Bangalore, a time that was highly improbable here given the condition of the track. Bheem Rao Poojari made it all the more creditable when he pulled off a surprise at the home stretch to pip early leader Punjab's Ravinder Singh in the 1500 metres for boys under-18. Double for Satishwaran K. Satishwaran claimed a creditable double winning the hammer throw for boys' under-18 to his kitty. Satishwaran, the powerful Trichy lad, claimed the shot put gold on Tuesday. Today he heaved the hammer to a distance of 56.53 metres, way ahead of the field. Kerala, once again garnered a handful of medals, but it was the 1-2 finish in the long jump pit in the boys' under-20 event that caught the eye. A.K. Sani looked comfortably placed for the gold with a leap of 7.12 metres but his Statemate Rajesh R. produced that extra effort for a 7.46 metres jump to clinch the brightest metal. Chitra K. Soman, formerly of Kerala, but running in the Jharkand colours now, staged a fine burst in the final 30 metres, to emerge the fastest women of the meet in a time of 12.29 seconds.
