Dikshit flayed for tax system announcement

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. The Opposition BJP in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi today alleged that the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit's announcement of the decision to introduce the new "Unit Area System'' for self-assessment of property tax would be implemented from April 1 was a "political gimmick'' aimed at drawing mileage in an election year.

Damning the announcement as "premature'' and "incomplete'' done by "by-passing the constitutional rights of the Corporation'', the Leader of the Opposition in the MCD House, Subhash Arya, alleged that conspiracy was being hatched to benefit higher income class.

The BJP councillor and Standing Committee member, Vijender Kumar, alleged that the announcement was premature as the tax rate was yet to be finalised. Moreover, if implemented under present circumstances would result in huge revenue losses to the Corporation, he said, adding it would also adversely affect middle and lower income classes.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the House in the MCD, Ram Babu Sharma, said all allegations levelled by the BJP were baseless and the announcement had been made so that the

Technical Committee's report could be sent by the Delhi Government to the Centre for approval on priority basis so that the system could be in place by April.

Assuring all councillors that the proposals would be finalised only after having being discussed in the Corporation where concerns of all classes would be addressed, Mr. Sharma said soon the Municipal Evaluation Committee would be formed to assist people in calculating their property tax.
