Cop honoured for bravery

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JAN.8 . Constable Jasbir Singh did the Delhi police proud when he grappled with two alleged miscreants despite sustaining serious injuries till help arrived near a flyover at Model Town in North- West Delhi on Monday evening. Recognising his dedication, the Delhi police Commissioner granted him out-of-turn promotion with immediate effect and made him a Head Constable. According to the police, Jasbir, posted with Model Town police station, was on patrol duty near Arybhat Polytechnic Institute.

Around 7-30 p.m., he noticed two young men loitering under suspicious circumstances under the nearby Ashok Vihar flyover. Inquiries revealed that the two used to indulge in anti-social activities in the area. Jasbir then went up to them to make inquiries, but the duo began fleeing. However, he managed to catch hold of one of them.

The miscreant then tried to free himself by biting Jasbir on his hands, nose and neck. His associate returned to help him. He picked up a stone and hit Jasbir repeatedly on his face and head, besides threatening him with a country-made revolver. Jasbir lost three of his tooth in the scuffle.

However, one of them began fleeing as he saw another police team rushing to help the constable. The team was posted at a picket about 250 metres away and rushed to help Jasbir after they spotted the scuffle.

The second team managed to catch the fleeing miscreant, while a profusely bleeding Jasbir held on to the other accused. They were identified as Hira Lal and Toshin Ali, both residents of Ashok Vihar. Toshin had injured Jasbir with the stone and was in possession of the fire weapon. In fact, the police said the incident could have turned tragic had Toshin opened fire.

Jasbir, who was bitten by Hira Lal, has been admitted to Pentamid Hospital in Model Town where his condition was reported to be serious but stable.

Police investigations revealed that Hira was involved in a case of attempt to murder reported from Ashok Vihar. Toshin also has a criminal past and has been arrested in cases of theft and drug peddling. A case of attempt to murder, assaulting and obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty and Arms Act has been registered at Model Town police station and investigations are on.
