MMA flexes its muscle

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Jan. 8. Notwithstanding the pressure from the United States to intensify the hunt for Al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives fleeing from Afghanistan, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), an alliance of six religious parties, has begun flexing its muscle demanding an end to the cooperation with the U.S.-led coalition in the war against terrorism.

The MMA today demanded an emergency session of the National Assembly to discuss what it termed "all significant issues".

The MMA believes that Pakistan's foreign policy is dictated by the U.S. and has accused the Government of surrendering the sovereignty of the country by allowing U.S. agencies to have a free run. The arrest of two prominent doctors at the behest of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the clash between the U.S. and Pakistan troops on December 29 near the Afghan border has only strengthened the impression.
