Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Editorial `Rites of passage' (Jan. 9) brings out the difficulties on the illegal immigrants' issue. The everlasting problem of 15 million Chakma refugees is yet to be resolved. The 10,000 or so Pakistani overstayers could be deported. But the Bangladesh citizens will pose a major problem whether they are permitted to stay here or sent back, especially when they hold valid ration cards and election ID cards. Political patronage and laxity in enforcement of immigration rules have created such a challenging situation. A pragmatic approach has to be evolved to address the problem.
