Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the article by Amrik Singh `UGC at fifty' (Jan. 9). With all the barriers in higher education getting dismantled in 2005, thanks to GATT and the WTO, the higher education segment will become an open and free market. The freer the market, the stronger must be the regulator to prevent abuses by the players. The UGC needs to urgently reinvent itself and take upon itself the task of upgradation, maintenance and quality assurance in colleges and universities.
