Addressing a meeting to review the progress in promotion of rural technology, Mr. Pant said though many institutions were working in the country for the development of rural technology, the outreach had been limited. Therefore a coordinated mechanism was required that would address the issues of rural technology in a holistic manner so as to help in poverty alleviation. The recently-approved Tenth Plan has set specific targets for poverty alleviation and creation of employment opportunities to absorb the growing additions to the labourforce. Rapid agricultural growth and promotion of rural non-farm enterprises form part of the strategy to eradicate poverty in rural areas. Consequently, the potential of rural non-farm sector for generating large scale employment and production of wide range of value added products by utilising local resources would need to be realised during the Plan period, Mr. Pant pointed out.
