Complete govt. schemes by deadline, officials told

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI Jan. 9 . The Kodagu District in-charge Secretary, Falguni Rajkumar, on Thursday called upon government officials to achieve targets besides ensuring that benefits of government schemes reached all people. He was reviewing the progress achieved by the government departments in Kodagu District from March 2002 to December 31 at the Old Assembly Hall here.

Mr. Rajkumar exhorted the officials to utilise the funds released by the Centre and the State Government by March. The utilisation certificate would have to be submitted to the Centre in time or else the State Government would be in no position to seek additional funds for the next year. He advised the officials to work honestly to implement government schemes for the benefit of the common people in a time-bound manner.

Mr. Rajkumar, who expressed unhappiness while hearing statistics being provided by certain officials, asked them to come with clear statements and proper statistics. Achievements should be recorded correctly and presented when asked for, he said.

Mr. Rajkumar said he would conduct review meetings in Kodagu every two months to ensure proper implementation of government programmes in the district.

There should be no anomaly in identifying the beneficiaries under the Ashraya, Ambedkar, and Indira Avas housing schemes, he said. As far as drinking water was concerned, the State Government and the Centre had provided enough funds. Therefore, there should be no complaint about water scarcity, he told officials.

The Deputy Commissioner, B.S. Palaksha, explained the steps being taken with regard to the regularisation of forest encroachments in view of the Supreme Court order to him.

On the relocation of tribal people, the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, M.K. Baladeva Krishna, said some had volunteered to move out, and they had been rehabilitated.

The Superintendent of Police, Umesh Kumar, explained the steps taken by the police to control violent incidents that occurred in Kodagu in the wake of the desecration of Sri Harischandra temple at Palur in December 2001.

Mr. Rajkumar asked the Forest Department to take swift action to curb the elephant menace in Kodagu. He asked the personnel of the department to respond immediately to distress calls following elephant attacks.

The department was advised to chalk out a couple of instant measures, including ways of driving away elephants, when villagers faced elephant attacks.
