D.K. Sahitya Sammelana from today

MANGALORE JAN. 9 . The three-day Dakshina Kannada District Sahitya Sammelana will begin at Bantwal on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the President of the Dakshina Kannada District Sahitya Parishat, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, said there would deliberations on various issues concerning Kannada. The noted writer, Aerya Lakshminarayana Alva, would preside over the valedictory function on Sunday, he said.

Special goshtis on "Hari Charite" of Pu. Ti. Narsimhachar, "Ramayana Darshanam" of K.V. Puttappa (Kuvempu), "Bharata Sindhurashmi" of V.K. Gokak, and "Ramayana Mahanweshanam" of M. Veerappa Moily would be held on the occasion. Mr. Moily would be honoured by the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, B. Hanumaih, Mr. Kalkura said.

The sammelana would have a special lecture on the works and life of late B.V. Karanth. Mr. Kalkura said that the organising committee had included "Chutuku Sahitya" (limericks) in the sammelan.

The works of N. D'Souza, Fakeer Mohammad Katpady, and U. Maheshwari, would be reviewed in one of the sessions. C.H. Krishna Shastry, B.V. Mahidasa, and Prabhakar Shishila would take part in a seminar on "Role of literature in education". Ten poets would attend a special kavi goshti. M.Ramachandra would deliver a lecture on "Memoirs of Shivaram Karanth", he said.

Mr. Kalkura said 16 outstanding achievers would be honoured for their contributions to society. They included the Chairman of the Karnataka Bank, Ananthakrishna (Banking), T. Shyam Bhat (Administration), S. Seetharama Rai (Education), Manohar Prasad and Jayaram Rai (Journalism), Vasanth Salian Balenja (Public Service), N. Mogasale (Literature), C.H. Gopalakrishna Shastry (Tala Maddale and Purana Pravachana), P. Krishna Naik (Yakshagana), Vinay Hegde (Industry), Y. Abdul Kunhi (Industry), P. Srinivas Rao (Cooperative Movement), Ganga Padekal (Literature), Janardhana Yerpakatte (Literature), Leelavathi Baipadithaya (Yakshagana), and Raymond D'Souza (Bodybuilding).

He said 14 Kannada books and a souvenir, "Suma Sourabha", would be released at the sammelana.

He appealed to the people of Dakshina Kannada to donate generously for the cause of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana as the committee was finding it difficult to meet the financial commitments of the meet. Any savings from the sammelana would be spent on the Kannada Sahitya Bhavan at Bantwal, he added.
