The theatre has remained closed since Dasara festival last year on the instructions of higher authorities following the loss of vision of five cataract patients owing to post-surgery infections in October first week. The Joint Director of A.P. Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, Satyanarayana, visited the hospital and the houses of the blinded persons here and conducted an enquiry into the cases of loss of vision after surgery, but no action followed so far and the victims were not compensated. The hospital superintendent, V. Kumaraswamy, said he ordered reopening of the ophthalmic operation theatre after receiving laboratory reports on the swabs taken from operation theatre walls, tables, surgical and sterilisation equipment, sent for analysis. Although no eye surgeries were conducted due to closure of the operation theatre, the ophthalmic surgeons have not conducted advanced screening of cataract patients to identify those requiring surgery, though they had set targets to achieve by March end.
