powered North Zone to a seven-wicket victory over Central Zone at the Panjim Gymkhana ground here on Thursday. Earlier, Central Zone scored 216 for nine in 47 overs with opener Gagan Khoda (80) standing firm as wickets fell at regular intervals on a flat deck. North scored its second successive victory and now has nine points, with the four it gained today. Central with its second defeat is now out of contention for the Deodhar Trophy. The match suffered a 47-minute delayed start due to damp conditions and was reduced to 47 overs per side. North opted to field and captain Sodhi's throw swooping on Gagan Khoda's nudge to short covers left Jyothi Yadav stranded. Soon captain Amay Khurasiya top-edged a pull and the repair-job was left to Gagan Khoda. The opener found an ally in southpaw Tejinder Pal Singh (45). The 89-run third-wicket partnership between Khoda and Tejinder was the lone bright spark in a desolate innings. Khoda, after a streaky start, spotted the ball nice and early and whipped Sodhi and drove Amit Mishra for fours. The innings got a belated surge with Naman Ojha (26) and Nikhil Chopra's (17) lusty hits but the runs proved inadequate as North had a perfect start with Gautam Gambhir and Akash Chopra putting on 72 in 11.5 overs. The Delhi duo's task was made easy as seamers Harvinder Singh and Sanjay Pandey sprayed all over. Central nearly grabbed a rainbow with Murali Karthik luring Pankaj Dharmani to his doom while J.P. Yadav sent down a niggardly spell from the Mandovi River end (10-1-23-1), claiming Mithun Manhas. The score read 130 for three in 28.1 overs but the alarm bells never rang as Sodhi buckled down to the secondary role while Akash found the singles and the ropes with a monotony that left Central yearning for the drinks break. Akash's unbeaten tenure at the crease also had its share of luck as Amay Khurasiya dropped a sitter at first slip off J.P. Yadav. Akash was then on 39. North will play against West at Hyderabad on January 12 while Central will clash with East on the same day here at Margao.
