A Badani show to the hilt

By Our Sports Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM JAN. 9. Firmly putting behind the disappointment at missing the bus for 2003 World Cup, Hemang Badani played a key role in South Zone scoring a remarkable 10-run win over East Zone in the Deodhar Trophy limited-overs cricket tournament here on Thursday.

It was not just in batting that Badani (108, 99 balls, 3 x 4, 2 x 6) showed his proficiency, the catch that he took running to his right on deep mid-on fence to send back the well-set Shiv Sundar Das (63, 71 balls, 6 x 4) off Y. Venugopala Rao was a fair indication that one of the best one-day cricketers in the country is being badly treated by the selection committee.

Predictably, South elected to bat and Ambati Tirupati Rayudu (30, 34 balls, 4 x 4, 1 x 6) was in avoidable hurry but did make an impression especially with the huge six over long-on off Debashish Mohanty, before failing to check an intended off-drive as was deceived by a slower one from medium-pacer Prabhanjan Mullick.

For the rest of the innings, it was almost all about the technical competence and the elegance of Hemang Badani. He, in the company of N. Arjun Yadav (44, 65 balls, 2 x 4) put on 108 runs for the third wicket in 20 overs.

For East Zone, the surprise packet in bowling was the left-arm spin of captain Rohan Gavaskar who returned an impressive five for 35.

When East began the chase, it was the turn of another India discard, Shiv Sundar Das, to display his prowess. When Das and the hard-hitting M.S. Dhoni (71, 87 balls, 7 x 4, 2 x 6) were together, it looked as though East was on course to victory. But Badani's brilliant effort, which sent back Das, put the brakes on East run-chase.
