Billiards & Snooker
By Our Special Correspondent
A muscular collegian from Jalandhar, Lad had a good rival in state-mate Laljit Singh. The two went on to erase the existing records in the 94 kg category with a wonderful exhibition of power and poise. If it was Laljit, who initially, in both the snatch and jerk, went past Punjab's Mandeep Kumar's marks of 132.5 kg and 165 kg set last January in Sangli with lifts of 135 and 170 then they proved to be `records' of the shortest tenure. Within minutes Lad rewrote them with lifts of 145 and 172.5 kgs. In fact such was Lad's mood that when he revised his third lift in the snatch event to 148.5 kg from the already loaded 147.5, the youngman had set his sights on bettering the senior National mark of 148 kg. Had he succeeded it would have been a historic moment for the sport in the country. However, the bar failed to rise above his shoulders, Lad dropping it and in the process sustained an injury to the area below the left knee. It did not call for concern but enough damage was done nevertheless for him to cut down his ambition in the jerk, where his best was just narrowly above Laljit's. According to his coach, he was capable of raising 177.5 kg. Nonetheless the record books will bear his name not only in snatch and jerk but also in total lift as well in this weight category. Equally facile was Ranu's win. Last year this Behrampur girl had taken part in the 63 kg category and had her name against the jerk record, which incidentally was erased here. This time this compact bundle of energy, who was picked for the Lucknow SAI centre of excellence after her performance last time, participated in the 69 kg category and showed how much she had improved through systematic training. Replacing Manipur's A. Bijoya Devi's snatch mark of 82.5 with a lift of 85, Ranu added 7.5 to up Janeswari Devi's 102.5 kg record in jerk. The two new marks meant the total lift record also went for a toss. Bijoya Devi had set it at 182.5 kg and Ranu made it 195 for an impressive jump. If Lad and Ranu set the tone then Gurdeep Singh in the 105 kg category spoiled the show through over-ambition. Like the earlier two, this Punjab lad too could have returned from Chennai with three records in his name but despite looking the best, went for too high marks. The failure to raise 142.5 kg from 137.5 meant L. Manjunathan of Pondicherry will keep the snatch mark (140 kg) while in the jerk, his first try of 172.5 equalled Gurumukh Singh's mark. But attempting 180 from there proved his folly. The bar did not rise. The results: Men: 94kg: 1. Lad Singh (Pun) 145 (NR)-172.5 kg (NR)-317.5 kg (NR); 2. Laljit Singh (Pun) 135-170-305; 3. K. Ezilarasan (TN) 125-160-285; 105 kg: 1. Gurdeep Singh (Pun) 137.5-172.5 (ER)-310; 2. Rakesh Kumar (Pun) 115-150-265; T. Prasanna (TN) 115-147.5-262.5. Women: 69 kg: 1. Ranu Mohanty (Oris) 85 (NR)-110 (NR)-195 (NR); 2. K. Manimala (AP) 75-97.5-172.5; 3. Sapna Raut (Mah) 77.5-92.5-170.
