Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Special Correspondent
The discussions, held in continuation of the interaction that the State Government has been having with the Centre on the issue, would continue after the State makes up its mind on the Agriculture Ministry's offer. The Union Ministry has valued the 7,000-acre Aralam farm at Rs.146 crores, whereas the figure arrived at by the State Government is Rs.42 crore. The State Government has sought the farm land for distribution among landless Adivasis. The Agriculture Ministry has offered to lower its valuation if the land is proposed to be used for a social cause, Dr. Kuttappan told The Hindu after the talks with the Central officials. The farm land was acquired by the State Government in 1972 for Rs.1.63 crores and handed over to the Centre for a consideration of Rs.20 lakhs. The Centre has so far invested Rs.36 crores in the farm. However, the farm has been incurring heavy losses, resulting in exodus of workers. At present, only namesake farming operations was taking place at Aralam, the Minister said. Dr. Kuttappan said the Government would consider the Agriculture Ministry's offer and give an appropriate reply very soon. The Union Agriculture Ministry was represented at the talks by Sawhaney, Additional Secretary and Bahuguna, Joint Secretary.
