Bus operators to increase fares in Shimoga

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA Jan. 9 . The Bus Operators' Association of Shimoga has decided to increase bus fares by 10 per cent from January 17 following the increase in the prices of the diesel and spare parts.

It cited the increase in maintenance cost of vehicles and insurance cover as other reasons for the hike.

In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority, Tushar Girinath, the Secretary of the association, Y.N. Ravi, said it was inevitable for the bus operators to increase the fares when the KSRTC had increased its fares twice in the recent past.

Mr. Ravi said the association had decided to suspend the operation of private buses in the district from January 17 to protest against the "failure" of the district administration and the police to provide adequate protection to the drivers and other crew members of long-distance non-stop buses.

He cited an incident when angry villagers threw stones at non-stop buses plying between Shimoga and Shikaripur via Sawalanga, and between Shimoga and Honnali via Kunchenahalli on December 8.
