Janashakti naxal held

By Our Staff Reporter

ELURU JAN. 9. The Superintendent of Police, Kripananda Tripathi Ujela, on Thursday claimed that police have crushed the extremist problem in West Godavari district.

Addressing a press conference, he said activities of the CPI-ML (Janashakti) and other splinter groups of the naxalite movement were brought to a halt with the arrest K. Vasu, a hardcore extremist, in Rajahmundry on Thursday.

Vasu, a key functionary in the Veeranna Dalam of the Janashakti group, was the lone survivor of a police encounter, which took place at Pattiseema in the agency areas in 2000. Even as the Dalam commander, Vali alias Lakshman Rao, the deputy commander, Srinu, and the member Bakasura, were killed in the encounter, Vasu escaped by ducking under the driver's seat of an auto in which the dalam members were going.Police made several attempts during the last two years to nab Vasu.

The Special Branch police finally nabbed him while he was taking shelter in his sister's house in Rajahmundry.

The SP said the arrest of Vasu was to pre-empt his attempts to revive the Dalam in the agency area by virtue of his thorough knowledge about the topography and its contiguous areas.

He also has contacts with a key figure, Ramakrishna, who was currently engaged in revitalising the Veeranna Dalam in Khammam district. Vasu, an expert in swimming, was into teak smuggling after his temporary detachment with extremist activities, the SP said. Meanwhile, Mr. Ujela clarified that there was no possibility of the People's War extending its armed conflict into the district, which was known as a shelter zone in PW's parlance.
