Poor response to Surat bypoll

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR JAN. 9. The inconsequential election to the Surat west seat in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly evoked poor response, with just about 40 per cent of the electorate exercising their franchise today.

The polling passed off peacefully. The December 12 election to the Assembly had recorded more than 61 per cent turnout.

The polling for the seat was countermanded in December following the death of the BJP candidate and former Minister, Hemmant Chapatwala, two days before the election.

The BJP has nominated Mr. Chapatwala's wife, Bhavnaben Chapatwala, as its candidate.

With the BJP having already won 126 seats in the 182-member Assembly, the outcome of the election would have no impact, but a defeat in the seat, considered a BJP stronghold, could dilute the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi's undisputed hold in the party.
