Mayawati refutes Mulayam's charge

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW Jan. 9. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, today rejected allegations by the Samajwadi Party leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav, that funds were being collected illegally to be gifted to her on her birthday on January 15.

She told correspondents at a hurriedly called press conference here that it had been the wont of the Samajwadi Party leader to make such baseless allegations to tarnish her image. "Mr. Yadav should either come forward to substantiate the allegations or seek a public apology", she said.

The Chief Minister said her party had always collected funds on her birthday, no matter whether she was in the government or out of it and there was no compulsion, harassment or allurement involved in the collection.
