Govt. committed to Kannada cause: CM

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore Jan. 9. The Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, declared here today that there was no going back on the Government's resolve to use Kannada in all spheres.

Mr. Krishna was speaking after releasing `Karnataka Sangati' and four thesauruses on administration, universities, computers, and mass media brought out by the Kannada Development Authority. He said that the Government had implemented important recommendations of the authority such as reservation in admission to Kannada-medium students in professional courses and in recruitment.

The Chief Minister said that he was firm on implementing another recommendation to punish officers not using Kannada in administration. Pointing out that the Government had faced crises in the past two years, Mr. Krishna said that what pained him was that the bureaucracy had failed to cooperate with him in "becoming a people's chief minister".

Praising the KDA Chairman, Baragur Ramachandrappa, the Chief Minister said he had done remarkable service to Kannada and also ensured that the progress of other languages was not affected. He had acted as a bridge between religious minorities and Kannada protagonists in taking Kannada to the hearts of minorities, Mr. Krishna said.

The Higher Education Minister, G.Parameshwar, and the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, also praised Dr. Ramachandrappa.

In his keynote address, Dr. Ramachandrappa thanked Mr. Krishna for implementing the authority's recommendations. He said that at one time he was upset over the lack of enthusiasm among bureaucrats in cooperating with the KDA, and expressed his desire to quit to Mr. Krishna.

Dr. Ramachandrappa advised officers to be creative while drafting reports and letters in Kannada.

The authority secretary, A.V.Prasanna, was present.
