MDMK cadres readying to beat Pongal deadline

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI JAN. 11. Even as the Q Branch filed charge sheets against the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, and eight other functionaries in a POTA court in Chennai, the cadres are ``working round-the-clock'' to achieve by Pongal the target of securing one-crore signatures to secure their release.

``We have already obtained more than 60 lakh signatures''. A memorandum, backed by the signatures, will be handed over to the President and the Prime Minister in New Delhi during the third week of January,'' the party leader and Union Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, M. Kannappan, told The Hindu here.

Dismissing any misunderstanding with the State BJP, he said all prominent leaders, including L. Ganesan, had signed the memorandum.

``Even communist leaders have criticised the arrest of our leader in Parliament,'' he said.

The question of seeking bail would arise only after the accused received copies of the charge sheet, said Mr. Kannappan.
