Tamil Nadu
By K. Subramanian
According to P.N.Parthasarathy, a retired audit officer and honorary agent of the temple, the tank that was brimming with water in early sixties had dried as the inlets had been closed because of encroachments at various places. He said that if the tank was full, the town would not face any water problem as the groundwater table would improve substantially. He said that the park was being maintained by the temple and pointed out that water for the mini tank was now being pumped out from the well that was also inside the tank. The mini tank has been built to enable devotees to offer poojas on the Amavasai day. Mr.Parthasarathy said that under the rainwater harvesting scheme, the huge tank could be filled up by bringing the surplus water from the nearby Kaakalur tank and also by constructing a check dam at Cooum river for which several encroachments had to be removed. He said that that former Tamil Nadu Chief Engineer (Irrigation), A.Mohanakrishnan had also expressed the same view. Meanwhile, Tiruvallur Collector, N.Dhananjayan said that the district administration was also working on a proposal to fill the huge tank with water under the rainwater harvesting system.
