Letters to the Editor
Sir, Andre Beteille's article `Hinduism in danger?' (Jan. 3) is thought-provoking. It is obvious that God is "indivisible and compassionate to all". This philosophical dimension of religion and its very essence is lost sight of by those who perceive dangers of various kinds to their own faith from what they perceive as "rival" faiths. It is necessary to identify the root causes of this societal malady. One wonders what is the beneficial effect for society of the hate campaign launched by leaders of Hindutva against non-Hindu faiths.
L.S. Vishwanath,
* * * Sir, Andre Beteille has brought out the feelings of both Hindus and Muslims before and after Independence. Muslims in Pakistan feel that Islam is in danger and Hindus in India presume that Hinduism is in danger. Why don't the people have confidence in their religion? All religions are safe if negative thinking is discarded. If both religions avoid this one aspect, there won't be any communal violence.
S.K. Chari,
