Dual citizenship

Sir, — The announcement of dual citizenship to PIOs is welcome. The objective is to secure economic contribution from the Indian Diaspora. Merely announcing dual citizenship will not work towards the objective unless corruption, inspector raj and procedural delays are removed. An investor-friendly atmosphere alone will attract the resources for investment from abroad.

Vijay Singh,
New Delhi

Sir, — It is an irony that the BJP-led NDA Government which sees Sonia Gandhi as a foreigner is now trying to cash in on the Indian Diaspora. They may sympathise with India, but are no longer Indian citizens.

Lijum Ete,

Sir, — The NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin in foreign countries have been pampered enough and one wonders why dual citizenship should be given to them, that too for persons in selected countries? The Government should do something for people in the country and those who leave the country for greener pastures could take care of themselves.

V.S. Venkatavardan,
Salem, T.N.

Sir, — The move to allow dual citizenship is for the convenience of easy travelling by NRIs who are already enjoying special status under the Income Tax Act.

The travel irritants can be removed by granting NRIs long-term multiple entry visas rather than twin nationalities. Dual citizenship will encourage brain drain.

Sushil Mehra,
Bangalore
