Teachers and pay

Sir, — Anjali Mody's `Overseers in the graduate factory' (Jan. 5) is guilty of oversimplification in saying: "The vast majority of those teaching at the hundreds of colleges and university departments are there because it is a job. A job they would much rather not do." Like in every other profession, college and university teachers also have their share of black sheep. But there are also teachers who are regular, update their lectures, interact with their students and are live wires in their colleges and departments. They teach not just for a pay cheque but because teaching gives them a lot of personal space and great personal satisfaction.

Vinod Chowdhury,
New Delhi
