Code on security for ports and ships formulated

Mumbai Jan. 12. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has formulated an ``International Ship and Port Facility Security Code'' as a fallout of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

``This code, which will run parallel to the International Safety Management system, will have to be put in place by the ports, including India, and international shipping by July 2004,'' shipping industry sources said here today.

The attack on the World Trade Centre in New York has brought the issue of security to the fore, which lead to the IMO formulating such a code.

Sources said the purpose of the code was to provide a standardised and consistent framework for evaluating risk, enabling governments to offset changes in threat with changes in vulnerability for ships and port facilities.
