In a resolution passed at its national council, which is meeting here, the party warned the Government today against agreeing to any proposal which would "tamper with the integrity of the existing States'' in the northeast. "The existing constitutional boundaries of the States of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh should not be disturbed,'' it said, as this would have "far-reaching consequences for peace in the entire region.'' And it urged the Centre to convene an all-party meeting on the issue to build a national consensus. Briefing the press, Shameem Faizee, CPI central secretariat member, said that besides passing the resolutions, the meeting also discussed the political organisational report and work report. In another resolution, the CPI expressed "great concern'' over the reported statement of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader, Praveen Togadia, to "have another Ayodhya'' and destroy the tomb of the Sufi saint at Bababudangiri in Chikmaglur district of Karnataka. It urged the Karnataka Government to "nip the communal design in the bud'' and said that communal tensions were being created by the Sangh Parivar with an eye on the Assembly elections. The site was sacred to both Hindus and Muslims who had a long tradition of "performing their prayers in their respective ways.'' A resolution welcoming the "united action of the working class and peasantry'' in resisting the "neo-liberal'' economic policies was also adopted. It noted with satisfaction that despite "brutal attacks" from the Government, the working class had stood united in its struggle against privatisation of national assets. It called for widespread mobilisation for the proposed "march to Parliament'' on February 26. A fourth resolution congratulating the NALCO coordination committee and the NALCO sangharsa samiti for successfully uniting the general public of Orissa against the privatisation of the aluminium giant was also adopted.
