MPLF forces pushed back, says BSF DIG

By Our Correspondent

IMPHAL JAN. 14. The DIG, BSF (Manipur and Nagaland sector), P.K. Mishra, has said that for the first time, members of the Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF) have been "pushed back" from their well-entrenched mountain camps at Sajik Tampak in Chandel district bordering Myanmar after a four-day-long gun battle which began on Jan. 8. Talking to reporters last night at the BSF headquarters, Mr. Mishra said the Manipur Chief Minister and Home Minister, Okram Ibobi, had ordered the mopping-up operations.

Refuting media reports about heavy BSF casualties, Mr. Mishra said two BSF personnel were killed, while the MPFL had lost four men.

MPLF insurgents, armed with rocket launchers, had attacked BSF posts and patrols in many places as diversionary tactics. Some personnel had sustained injuries in sniping at Sugnu, Moirang and Ningthoukhong. In the exchange of fire, a 10-year-old girl was killed and her father injured at Ningthoukhong. An ex-gratia payment of Rs.1 lakh has been announced for the victim and Rs.10, 000 for the father. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the death of the girl.
