Kirti Azad to be released

Darbhanga (Bihar) Jan. 14. A district court today ordered the release of the local MP and cricketer, Kirti Azad, arrested last night in connection with the alleged ransacking of a local Electricity Department office in 2001, even as police arrested over 100 BJP workers protesting his arrest.

The Second Class Judicial Magistrate, Raj Narain Nigam, ordered Mr. Azad's release after he furnished a personal bond. The Magistrate granted bail to three of his supporters after they deposited a surety of Rs. 1,000 each. Mr. Azad, the former BJP district unit chief, Jagdish Sah, the party town president, Sanjay Sarawagi, and another leader, Katikey Kumar, were produced before Mr. Nigam at his residence here since the court was closed on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Officials of the Bihar State Electricity Board had filed a case against Mr. Azad and his supporters for allegedly ransacking the local Mithila electricity board office on May 23, 2001 while demonstrating against the poor power supply.

The police had arrested Mr. Azad from his father-in-law's house in Donar area along with other party leaders. They were later shifted to the Circuit House.
