Talks with Naga rebels

Sir, — The decision of the Government to hold talks with the Naga leaders is a move in the right direction. This is a milestone in the longest secessionist movement in India. The most important thing is that the meeting ended on a positive note.

The Naga leader, Isak Swu, himself has said that the approach of the Government is mature and it wanted to tackle the problem realistically.

Sir — The talks with the NSCN (I-M) leaders is a welcome step, but the Naga leaders' demand for a Greater Nagaland is unjustifiable and unreasonable.

For instance, if all the Biharis demand a greater Bihar by adding all areas inhabited by them in the adjoining areas of Bihar, the response of the affected States will be negative.

Instead of raising such demands, it will be wiser to live in harmony and to concentrate on development.

M. Somen Singh,
New Delhi

Sir, — The NSCN (I-M) general secretary, Thuingaleng Muivah, has claimed Ukhrul as part of Nagaland, because he was born in and his forefathers were residents of Ukhrul.

If I were born in New Delhi and since the day of my great grand father our family has been staying in Delhi, can I claim that area of Delhi as part of Manipur?

Thounaojam Kenedy,
Imphal
