Mayawati's birthday

Sir, — What is the most brazen and open form of pillaging public money? Ask the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, who has pompously thrown a gala birthday party. So what if the tax-payers are dying of poverty and a cold wave. Mayawati is clever enough to understand that public memory is short. She knows that she can remain in power by instigating the illiterate masses, screaming from the dais about untouchability and caste inequalities.

Anupama Vedapuri,
Seattle, U.S.
