GE, Microsoft proposals may hog limelight

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Jan. 16. General Electric, Microsoft, Wipro, Southerland, Mackenzie, Reliance and a few other software majors would hog the limelight at the Global Investor Meet, beginning on January 18.

According to IT Secretary, Aruna Sundara Rajan, who participated in the press conference convened by the Industry- Information Technology Minister, P. K. Kunhalikutty, said that 12 top IT companies would be sending serious delegations to the GIM. She said that a majority of these companies were expected to make formal announcements at the GIM.

Ms. Sundara Rajan said that Technopark Phase II and the IT Park, Kochi, would be presented before the investors. The GIM would also have a slew of projects for small and medium IT companies.

She said that discussions had been going on for the last one year regarding the investment proposals. What mattered was not the amount of investments, but rather the possibilities of employment generation in the IT sector. The Infosys decision to invest in the State had made an impact and would go a long way in building confidence of IT investors.

Mr. John Mathai, Principal Secretary(Industry), said that one of the major proposals that would be presented at the GIM was for a super port at Kochi. The project proposal has been mooted by a South African company, which would present a Rs 3,500-crore project. The super port has been mooted in the context of Kerala's location advantage as the midpoint sea and air route between the U.S. and the Far-East.

The proposed super port could be located anywhere between Vizhinjam and Kochi. It would make it possible for mother ships to call at port unlike the current practice of transporting cargo through feeder liners. The State Government was also optimistic about the Special Economic Zone at the Kochi Port Trust.
