Ernakulam maintains lead in State schools youth festival

ALAPPUZHA JAN. 18. As the fourth day of the 43rd State Schools Youth Festival drew to a close, Ernakulam district was maintaining a steady lead over the other districts closely followed by Kozhikode and Thrissur.

When the results of 62 items were announced, Ernakulam was leading the scoreboard with 292 points. While Kozhikode was in the second place with 281 points and Thrissur third with 278 points.

Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram are in the fourth and fifth places respectively with 270 and 262 points each.

The fourth day was marked by zealous speculations and eager expectations over the prospective winners of Kalaprathibha and Kalathilakam titles.

Though the final tally would be announced only by Sunday, P. Parvathy of Holy Angels HSS, Adoor, and Sreerag P. Sajeev from CMS High School, Thrissur, are likely to be the winners. Parvathy, winner of last year's Kalathilakam title, has already scored 38 points, while Sreerag has got 32 points with first prizes in Kuchipudi and mridangam and third prizes in Bharathanatyam and folk dance.

Though J.S. Manoop from Raja's HS, Neeleswaram, has scored a total of 48 points from eight items, he could not qualify for the Kalaprathibha title in the absence of a first prize in any item.

The flood of appeals continued on Saturday also with the result that 10 out of the total 25 appeals against the State-level results were sanctioned by the officials.

With a fee of Rs. 1,000 per appeal, the organising committee could collect a total of Rs. 15,000 as 15 appeals were rejected!

Almost all items, especially the more glamorous dance items and other group items, had more than 14 participants, with 19 teams for Margamkali and 17 for drama. Oppana had a total of 18 teams, with three teams participating from Kasaragde district itself.

Even a non-glamorous item like Malayalam recitation was not spared, with 19 participants appearing on stage. The total number of `appealed participants' in the State-level competitions rose to 152, with the DDEs sanctioning about 108 and rest with court orders.

The festival will conclude on Sunday evening, with the Agriculture Minister, K.R. Gouri, inaugurating the function and the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, presiding over. Kathakali (Single-Girls): I-Parvathy P (Holy Angels HSS, Adoor), II-Drisya K.M. (HSS, Sreekrishnapuram), III-Athira K (PEM HSS, Perinthalmanna).

Tabala: I-Vineeth C. (HSS, Memunda), II-Sagar B (GG BHSS, Chalappuram), III-Apu Joseph (SCHSS, Payyampilly). Kathakali Sangeetham (Girls): I-Mridula M.R. (NSS HSS, Meenchanda), II-Neethu A. Kumar (GVHSS, Trikkarippur), III-Visakha K (HS, Mundur, Palakkad).
