25 injured in grenade blast in J&K

By Shujaat Bukhari

JAMMU JAN. 19. Twentyfive people — most of them civilians — were injured when militants hurled a grenade in Kulgam township of south Kashmir today.

Militants lobbed the grenade towards a police bus at around 3.30 p.m., but it missed the target and exploded on the road, injuring civilians. The injured were taken to a local hospital and later shifted to a Srinagar hospital. The condition of some of them, including women, is serious. The blast caused panic in the area. Security forces have rushed to the spot.

Only two days ago the British High Commissioner in India, Rob Young, visited Kulgam and talked about ending violence in Kashmir.

ASI, son killed

Militants gunned down an assistant sub-inspector of the Jammu and Kashmir police, Mushtaq Ahmed, near Bandipore town in North Kashmir along with his young son Mudassir. Militants barged into his house and opened indiscriminate fire upon the inmates. Mushtaq was working with the Special Operations Group which the Mufti Government had promised to disband under the "healing touch'' programme.
