Former Minister Alwardas passes away

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM JAN. 20. The former Minister and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party's national council, Sunkari Alwardas, died at the NIMS in Hyderabad on Monday. He was 72 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

The late Alwardas was elected from Visakhapatnam-I constituency on the Congress ticket during the 1977 elections. He was Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development in T. Anjiah Cabinet and for Education in the Bhavanam Venkatram's Cabinet.

Incidentally, he was the only MLA from the city to become a Minister after the late Tenneti Viswanadham. No MLA from the city had the opportunity to gain a Ministerial berth later. Alwardas had quit the Congress, and after a stint with the Socialist Congress Party, joined the BJP and was given a party post at the State level and was later made a member of its national council.

He had established several educational institutions in the city and was associated with several social and service organisations. The body of Alwardas would be brought here on Tuesday morning, and the cremation would take place in the afternoon.
