Tirumailai-Velachery MRTS project to be completed by September

CHENNAI Jan. 20. The second phase of the MRTS project from Tirumailai to Velachery is likely to be completed by September this year and the section would be opened for EMU traffic from October, according to the Southern Railway General Manager, V.Anand.

The project was expected to be completed by December last year. However, due to the Railway Ministry's proposal to lay ballastless track on the elevated portion between Tirumailai and Taramani, the completion was delayed. Besides, a number of agencies, including the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority were involved in the execution of the project. Conventional track would be laid on the surface portion of the section from Taramani to Velacheri.

Though it would not be possible to complete the station building and other related works, minimum facilities would be provided before October this year for operating EMU services, Mr.Anand said talking to presspersons here today.

He said the project was being implemented with the State Government financing two thirds of the total cost of Rs. 691crores. So far the State had given Rs 356 crores and the Railway Ministry on its part had sanctioned Rs. 178 crores. Though the project was delayed there was no cost overrun, he added.
