`Shard Shetty was involved in cases in City'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Jan. 20. The underworld don, Sharad Shetty, who was killed in Dubai by unidentified persons, was reportedly involved in a few cases in Bangalore. However, Shetty's involvement in ases could not be pinpointed by the Karnataka police. There were only suspicions. It is believed that Shetty was operating a betting syndicate, a hawala racket, and an extortion racket.

Shetty was also involved in land deals and was a one-time associate of the underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim. He was mentioned as one of those who had reportedly taken supari (contract) for killing the well-known builder, Subbaraju, in Seshadripuram, two years ago. Shetty was also said to be involved in a killing in the City related to fixing a race.

Shetty, a native of Kapu village in Udupi District, had migrated to Mumbai where he made his mark in the world of crime. Soon after the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai, he left for Dubai, where he joined Dawood and emerged as his trusted supporter. Police believe that Shetty operated so cleverly that his name could not be linked to any criminal act. Shetty married the sister of a prominent hotelier in Mangalore, and his wife used to visit her native place almost every year.

When Shetty's wife visited Bangalore sometime ago, she was apprehended by the City police and interrogated.
