Letters to the Editor
Sir,__ Brig (Retd.) V.R.P. Sarathy's article "is Jehad sustainable against India?" published in (Open page, Jan. 14) clearly explains the implications of `jehad' in different perspectives. He has quoted from the Quran and Islamic scholars to stress that the terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir are not in accordance with the values enshrined in the holy book. The problem is not with Islam but with those who claim to be people belonging to this religion. Some warmongers and some criminal-minded people have brought disgrace to the religion by misinterpreting some tenet or the other of the Quran.
K. Sai Baba,
Sir, Mr. Sarathy has rightly pointed out the definition and the conditions under which `jehad' can be waged as directed in the Quran. The word `jehad' has been used by Pakistani militant groups to hide their intentions to occupy Kashmir. The article rightly brings out the fact that `jehad' can be waged only where there is oppression against Muslims or Islam whereas in our country, Muslims are neither oppressed nor have we been driven out of our lands. We are at liberty to follow our religion freely. The Government should take firm steps to eradicate terrorism.
K. Moinuddin,
