Letters to the Editor
Sir, High-profile birthday parties among politicians, cricketers and film-makers are not something new. But, what is worrying is the extravagance and use of public money. It is distressing that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati's 47th birthday celebration was a landmark in that it almost depleted the State's contingency fund by Rs. 1.35 crores. The irony was that the speech touched upon social justice. And more ironical was that while people were dying in the biting cold, the bureaucrats were busy celebrating their leader's birthday. And, all this was on `swabhiman diwas' in Lucknow. What kind of self-respect does a person have when she does not even feel an ounce of pain while squandering public money meant for social welfare?
