The researchers K.K. Gupta, former head of the Mining Engineering Department at BHU and his associates B.R. Parate, M.D. Patel, R.P. Singh and A. Jamal won the medal, awarded by the Institution of Engineers, for their work on "quantitative assessment of incubation period of coal underground mines". They have worked on evolving a methodology to predict the time lapse between the commencement of extraction of coal and the appearance of auto-oxidation (which leads to coal mine fires). The team considered 23 factors, adopting a quantitative and computational approach, to predict the occurrence of fire, which, in turn would help in maximum extraction of the coal before any sign of fire appears. Their work would lead to safer mining conditions and optimum resource recovery.
