Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
The state executive here alleged that a large number of bogus voters were included in the electoral rolls and doles were distributed. With ten Ministers camping at the constituency, opposition parties feared that there would be large-scale `violations' by the ruling party. Hence the party urged the Election Commission to take immediate steps for ensuring a `free and fair' election. Expressing its concern at the move to construct a weir across the Bhavani by the Kerala Government, the party wanted the State Governments to hold talks before taking any decision. Referring to the new Veeranam scheme, the CPI(M) wanted the State Government to come out with full details, as local farmers were apprehensive that the project would affect cultivation on about 75,000 acres. Fears of the farmers should be allayed before going ahead with the scheme. Meanwhile the state executive of the Tamil Nadu AITUC urged the State Government to supply rice instead of cooked food to farmers and undertake food-for-work programme throughout the State. The executive , which met here today, demanded early reconstitution of the Labour Advisory Board and the Labour Welfare Board, besides setting up of tripartite committees under the Labour department. It would participate in large numbers in a rally organised by trade unions in New Delhi on February 26.
