The numbers did not favour the Opposition as Mr. Shinde had wooed a majority of the Independents to his side. Minutes before the trust vote, he walked across the well of the House and shook hands with the Opposition leaders, Narayan Rane and Gopinath Munde. In his speech, he said, "If we have to play politics, let us do it but not on critical issues." He also requested the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition for cooperation on critical issues facing the State. Later, Mr. Shinde told presspersons that he would induct Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLAs into the Cabinet, but indicated that he would be happier with a team smaller than the one headed by his predecessor, Vilasrao Deshmukh. The expansion would take place on either Friday or Saturday. Mr. Shinde said he would focus on ways and means to put the finances of the State back on the rails as it was facing a debt trap. Later, Mr. Shinde also called on the NCP chief, Sharad Pawar, but refused to reveal what transpired at the meeting. It was Mr. Pawar who had initiated Mr. Shinde into politics.
