Letters to the Editor
Sir, With reference to your Editorial `A Sound Proposal' (Jan. 23), I would like to draw your attention to various studies and projects on border trade in the North East. Premier institutes in the country have carried out research studies and identified thrust areas of border trade that can facilitate economic prosperity in the backward region. Concrete actions on these studies and reports are long awaited. The recent revamping of the North Eastern Council can provide some successful initiatives in this direction. The Council together with the Department for Development of the North Eastern Region should undertake a few time-bound trade promotion measures with a missionary zeal. In this respect, the proposal by the Foreign Minister of Myanmar to hold a summit meeting of the political leaders of BIMSTEC is laden with substance and practical wisdom. This will go a long way to kickstart the moribund state of border trade in the North-East and make way for some healthy economic forces in the region.
Sasanka Sarmah,
