Miners' strike: no progress in talks

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad Jan. 25. The indefinite strike in the Singareni Collieries entered its fourth day on Saturday while no ice was broken at the talks between management and the unions at Kothagudem.

The revenue loss suffered by the Singareni so far out of the strike has been estimated at over Rs 30 crores, with Rs 5 crores calculated as production loss per day and an equal amount as wages forgone by the workers.

The "bilteral talks'' at Kothagudem at which no third party was present such as labour officers, however, ended optimistically with both sides deciding to meet again on Monday after Republic Day holiday.

A top Singareni official said, the management representatives remained committed to the four demands on which a minimum understanding was achieved yesterday.

Also, the Koyagudem Surface Miner which is being operated with police protection in Khammam district, continued to be an unresolved issue with the management saying at the meeting that they would not be able to simply withdraw it.

Its representatives were stated to have told the union leaders that 12 such Surface Miners were already under operation in Coal India Limited mines but the same unions--AITUC, INTUC, CITU, IFTU, HMS and BMS, did not demand their withdrawal as they were doing here, although they existed there also.

The Staff Officer at the Singareni Bhavan here monitoring the situation, S. Chadrasekhar, put the total output at over 60,000 tonnes on the fourth day with all the 12 opencast mines which were run with heavy machinery without many workers, working partially or fully along with five underground ones.
