Pat for VAT

Sir, — You have given a pat to the new VAT regime through your Editorial "Vat in 2003" (Jan. 23). One can find that the overhauling of the indirect tax structure by bringing a State-level VAT regime from April 1, 2003, is taking place after 63 years of the present sales tax system coming into vogue.

The erstwhile Madras State, under the stewardship of Rajaji, was the first to enact law for taxing commodities sales from October 1, 1939, to augment the revenue loss on account of prohibition. The new VAT regime, besides being simpler to administer, will also increase the revenue of the States.

Though belated, it is good that the Centre and the States have come forward to put an end to the vexatious tax system in the States.

K. Vasu,

Chennai
