`Married to economics'

Sir, — P.R. Brahmananda's demise is a great loss to India and the world of economics. His monumental studies on welfare economics were a milestone in economic thought. And his commentaries on budgets were classics. What struck me most were his bold opinions.

When Prof. Mahalanobis, considered the father of Indian planning, brought out his model for planned development, Prof. Brahmananda was the first critic of his state ownership theories though, in general, he agreed with the development concepts.

The students who learnt monetary economics from him always remembered his outstanding lectures.

Though he said he had no time to marry, his admirers used to say that he was married to economics.
